Informal Civil Society Organisations in Low and Middle-Income Countries and their Contribution to Development

29th August 2025

This K4DD Rapid Evidence Review examines informal Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in low and middle-income countries and their contribution to development.

The evidence review also explores how these groupings relate to each other as well as to formal civil society organisations. Informal civil society plays an important role in contributing to development goals in developing countries.

While there is no one typology to categorise informal CSO organisations, the literature suggests that some broad categories do exist. These are highlighted in this review.
