UK-Malawi Higher Education Partnerships

30th April 2026

This K4DD Rapid Evidence Review collates available evidence on UK-Malawi higher education partnerships.

The review draws on publicly available information available on university web pages, representative bodies (e.g., the Scotland Malawi Partnerships) and news articles. The review identifies a number of higher education partnerships, particularly those between Scottish universities and Malawian partners. The reason for these connections dates back to 1859 and the arrival of David Livingsone in Malawi and the establishment of a number of Scottish inspired institutions, these relationships continued and developed after independence. Malawian independence leaders (including John Chilembwe’s legacy) had long associations with Scottish missions and further to this in 2005, The Scottish Government signed a formal Cooperation Agreement with Malawi. Malawi thereby became the central partner country in Scotland’s new international development policy.
