This K4DD Rapid Evidence Review looks at the key systematic barriers in Brazil preventing human and economic development. In doing so, it brings out the major constraints to growth, poverty reduction, food security, health and education accessibility, and inclusion of marginalised groups.
It draws on literature from academic and grey sources focusing on the timeline post 2018. While sources drawn on are those published after 2018, the analysis of these studies focus on trends since the 2000s while also discussing barriers due to Brazil’s long historical legacy of colonialism and slavery. Namely, that this history has produced an unequal and extractive state and society that has been unable to bring about enough reforms to address issues of inequality and subsequently, growth and poverty as well.
