Migration Trends in the Eastern Neighbourhood and Central Asia
This K4DD Rapid Evidence Review explores the evidence about migration trends in the Eastern Neighbourhood and Central Asia and how are these expected to evolve.
The regions are defined as:
· Eastern Neighbourhood: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
· Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
There is a medium amount of literature on this issue, and medium to limited data. The majority of literature is produced by practitioner and policy organisations, with some literature by think tanks, and some, but much less, academic literature. While there are global datasets on migrant stock and displacement flows, the figures can vary across sets due to definitional variation, and the reality of the limits to accurate data collection in these territories and on these issues. There are particular data gaps and inconsistencies on the origin countries’ perspectives, return migration, gender, age, and irregular migration (Bossavie, et al., 2024). Some datasets and analysis do not yet reflect the changes brought about by the mass displacement of the Russian war in Ukraine.
